This has been a very challenging year on many fronts! Many of us were confronted by health crises and challenges. We had to address family emergencies. For many people, work became a hotbed of contention. Some saw relationships blossom while others faced the reality that a relationship was in peril. We walked in grief and we celebrated new life. We shouted for joy at the successes of our children and wept at decisions made that we knew were not good or prudent. We saw it all. We witnessed it all. In a few hours, 2018 will be over; it will become a memory.
Although a memory, many of us will carry the joys and sorrows of 2018 into 2019. Just because the calendar changes to a new year does not mean that our problems immediately vanish. It would be wonderful if problems could be dissolved and resolved at the twitch of a nose, the snap of a finger or a quick prayer. Most of us will walk through stuff and rejoice knowing that God is walking with us, encouraging and supporting our efforts. We will “look to the hills” for assurance and strength.
Equally so, as a congregation, we will stand with our brothers, sisters and community through all that 2019 will present. The beauty of being a Christian family is the affirmation and assurance that hand-in-hand we will be together. No matter what any of us face, we know our church family will be with us.
As we close out the year and anticipate what awaits us in 2019, we walk into the unknown with the promise of God that has sustained Christians for thousands of years, “I will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13.5).” This promise allows us to walk with heads held high, confidence assured, faith in tact, and the Church of Christ being a vibrant witness in the world.
Enjoy what remains of 2018. Join us in worship New Year’s Eve at 6:00 p.m. We will come together praying prayers of thanksgiving and reminding each other of God’s blessings. Happy New Year!
