God Is Faithful
“Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Jeremiah, Lamentations 3.22-23
Well, without much fanfare for many people, we said goodbye to 2018 and welcomed the unknown of 2019. We are not completely certain what this year will present to us. Many of the challenges we experienced in 2018 do not vanish with the stroke of the clock at midnight on December 31, 2018. Unfortunately, we will have to address certain issues that will continue to linger.
Yet, there will be many opportunities for us to trust God’s faithfulness. Many things will change, but God’s faithfulness remains constant. Knowing this, we ought not to become overwhelmingly consumed by any circumstance or adverse condition. God remains compassionate in God’s care for us and we can rely on that. Jeremiah says, in his hallmark verse that has been captured in a famous hymn, that God’s compassions are new every morning. Great is God’s faithfulness to us.
Knowing that God offers new opportunities for us to experience His compassions every morning should motivate us to move into 2019 with greater confidence, determination, and excitement. No matter what the day might unfold, we are assured that God is with us. Equally so, we have confidence that God will be faithful to us.
We will experience hardships and challenges in 2019. Many will shed tears of disappointment and joy. We will feel frustrated and exhilaration. One day we will be on top of the world and the same day we can be at the bottom. Yet, through all that we experience, God is faithfully with us.
Be encouraged in the confidence and assurance that God will not leave us in 2019. We may take steps to walk away from God, but God does not walk away from us! As African Americans here in the United States, God has walked with us since 1619 when that first group of enslaved Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia. Through all our strivings, we continue to enjoy successes and weather the storms of life because God continues to walk with us.
Throughout 2019, periodically stop and evaluate your walk with the Lord. How faithful are you to God and the Lord’s teachings? How faithful are you to the Church of Christ, to Tabernacle? Can God count on your faithfulness? Be assured, you can depend on God’s faithfulness to you today and every day. Happy New Year! Amen.
